When people talk about the Málaga coast, they usually mean the Costa del Sol: the stretch of shoreline from Manilva, next to Cádiz province, to Nerja, near Granada. It looks like a simple line on a map. Searching for a home is less straightforward: a listing may say Marbella when the property is in Estepona, or Casares when the home is by the beach and the old town lies inland.
This map of the Málaga coast helps you place each municipality and see which areas are close to one another. It also gives you a starting point before looking at individual homes.
Map of the Costa del Sol
Follow the coast from Cádiz towards Granada and the sequence to keep in mind is Manilva, Casares Costa, Estepona, Marbella, Mijas, Fuengirola, Benalmádena, Torremolinos, Málaga city, Rincón de la Victoria, Vélez-Málaga, Algarrobo, Torrox and Nerja.
Casares Costa is the coastal part of the municipality of Casares. Torre del Mar, another name you will often see, belongs to Vélez-Málaga. Puerto Banús, San Pedro Alcántara, Elviria and Cabopino are areas of Marbella, rather than separate municipalities. These distinctions matter when you compare locations and property listings.
Western Costa del Sol
To the west of Marbella are Manilva, Casares Costa and Estepona. Estepona has its own town centre and a long stretch of coastline towards Marbella. Listings also use “New Golden Mile” for part of eastern Estepona: it is a market name for an area, not another municipality.
Marbella sits at the centre of many property searches on the Costa del Sol. Its municipality contains very different locations: San Pedro Alcántara and Puerto Banús west of the town centre; the Golden Mile between Puerto Banús and Marbella; and Río Real, Elviria and Cabopino to the east. Nueva Andalucía lies behind Puerto Banús. Benahavís often appears in the same property search, but it is a separate municipality further inland.
Continuing towards Málaga, you pass Mijas, Fuengirola, Benalmádena and Torremolinos. Mijas Costa includes places such as La Cala de Mijas and Calahonda; it should not be confused with Mijas Pueblo in the hills. Fuengirola is a compact coastal town, while Benalmádena and Torremolinos connect this stretch of shoreline to Málaga city.
Eastern Costa del Sol
East of Málaga city, the route continues through Rincón de la Victoria and along the Axarquía coast. Then come Vélez-Málaga, with Torre del Mar on the shore, Algarrobo, Torrox and Nerja. In this part of the province, coastal neighbourhoods and villages a few kilometres inland often share the same municipal name. That name alone may not tell you where a home actually sits.
If you are looking for property here, check the specific neighbourhood or settlement, just as you would in Marbella or Estepona. Two homes in the same municipality may be very different distances from the beach, services and the motorway.
Costa del Sol property
First decide which places you need to be near. If your daily life revolves around Marbella and Puerto Banús, compare Marbella, Benahavís and eastern Estepona without relying only on the name in a listing. If Málaga city or the airport matters more, use the map to see how far west or east each option takes you.
Then move from the municipal map to the street. Two houses advertised as “Marbella” can offer very different day-to-day routines, and a sea view does not necessarily mean the beach is within walking distance. The map narrows your search; the precise location is what lets you assess a property.
At Inmolux Group, we work with buyers who want to understand an area before choosing a home. Tell us how you plan to use the property and which places you need nearby, and we can focus the search on locations that make sense for you.
