We achieve the highest quality standards in an extremely demanding market

#
José Manuel Osuna is a person for whom quality and meeting deadlines in construction are not just professional goals but a philosophy of life. With more than 25 years of experience, he has journeyed from being a university lecturer to becoming a successful engineer who excels both in theoretical knowledge and practical expertise in managing construction projects.

In this interview, José Manuel shares not only his professional experience but also his reflections on the key challenges of the modern construction industry. How can one strike a balance between speed, quality, and profitability? Why are sustainability and the durability of buildings becoming increasingly important? This conversation will captivate anyone interested in architecture, construction, and innovative approaches to realizing complex and high-quality projects.

— How did you enter the construction industry? Was it a conscious decision or a series of unexpected events?

— It was a series of coincidences. Initially, I didn’t plan on pursuing higher education. However, a friend convinced me to enroll in a degree program with him, and I ended up becoming a civil engineer, graduating from the University of Granada with one of the best academic records in my class. After graduating, I briefly worked as a lecturer at the School of Architecture and the School of Civil Engineering at the same university. During that time, I had my own office, published articles, and presented at seismic conferences. I also contributed to technical journals and textbooks on structures, soil mechanics, and calculus. Moreover, I was part of the team proposed by the University of Granada to develop European seismic regulations.

Later, I decided to transition to the private sector to broaden my expertise. I worked on project design and in technical offices. I realized that to design effectively, one must understand how projects are executed in practice. This led me to immerse myself in the construction process, taking on roles such as Site Manager, Project Director, Safety Coordinator, and Technical Consultant. My experience spans both residential and civil construction, providing me with a comprehensive understanding of the industry.

— What inspires you most about the construction industry?

— I prefer to use the term "sector" rather than "industry." What inspires me most is its constant evolution. Although change often meets resistance, the introduction of new systems, materials, regulations, and sustainable solutions drives the sector’s development.

Each project is unique. No two bricks are ever laid the same way, just as no two people are identical unless they are twins. This dynamism is both the charm of the profession and its greatest challenge.

— How can deadlines and high execution speed be ensured without compromising quality?

— This is a complex question. Everyone has a story about construction, much like medicine, where people say, "This is how it was done…" or "When I had that issue, I tried…." Each project is unique, with distinct circumstances and challenges. Meeting deadlines depends heavily on careful planning, which, unfortunately, is undervalued in the industry. It starts with a solid technical project, which serves as the foundation for rational and efficient planning. In my 25 years of experience, I can count on my fingers the projects that allowed for flawless execution from the start. These cases made the process significantly smoother. However, most projects required extra effort to correct errors, fill in gaps, and refine details.

— In your opinion, what is the main criterion for clients when choosing a construction company: speed, quality, or profitability?

— I always say that two mothers cannot produce a baby in four months. A balance between these criteria is essential. At Inmolux Group, we go beyond these metrics: we build not only quickly and with high quality but also with durability and comfort in mind.

— What are Inmolux Group’s advantages compared to its competitors?

— Our greatest asset is our people. Every team member, from the cleaning staff to the president, works with maximum dedication. Additionally, we focus on sustainability and always strive to exceed client expectations.

— What additional services or advantages do you offer to make clients feel as comfortable as possible at every stage of the project?

— The most important thing is to listen to clients, understand their needs, and guide them through any uncertainties. We immerse ourselves in each project, advising clients and offering solutions tailored to their often-demanding requirements.

— How do you handle unforeseen challenges on construction sites to avoid delays or budget overruns?

— The key is solid planning and the ability to anticipate problems. Our experience enables us to respond quickly and effectively to any issues that arise.

— What modern technologies or methods do you implement to stay at the forefront of the industry?

— We are continuously training and updating our knowledge. We actively seek out new materials, construction systems, and engineering solutions that enhance the quality and sustainability of our projects. Our multidisciplinary team fosters creativity, continuous improvement, and a forward-looking approach that allows us to progress daily.

— How do you motivate your team in complex projects? Can you share an example of an unconventional solution that brought the team together?

— My main strategy is to involve team members. I give them responsibility and the opportunity to learn from their mistakes because I believe that no one learns without making errors, and those who don’t act never make mistakes. The team achieves the goals, while individual members accomplish the tasks. If they participate in defining objectives, their involvement deepens, and the results are optimal. Those who avoid risk and prefer comfort do not contribute to the team’s growth. I define the strategy but leave the tactics to the team members, which encourages their potential and initiative.

— What is the most unusual or challenging request you’ve received during your career?

— Once, I was asked to prepare a technical report guaranteeing that a structure under construction in Málaga would not be affected by the sound waves generated during the fireworks display at the local fair. Initially, the request seemed unusual and even amusing, but we conducted the required analysis, and the client was very satisfied with the result.

— Can you share an example of an innovative approach in a project that exceeded client expectations?

— One example was completely redesigning a residential development to increase sellable square footage while reducing costs. My training as a civil engineer, combined with 20 years of construction experience, gives me a broader and deeper perspective than many residential building designers. We consider not only design but also conservation and maintenance concepts. These values are highly appreciated by our clients because they make their lives easier, more comfortable, and more cost-efficient.

— Which global construction project or architect inspires you the most?

— Beyond iconic achievements like the Pyramids of Giza and the Eiffel Tower, I admire projects like the Falkirk Wheel in Scotland, designed by Butterley Engineering, and the Marina Bay Sands complex, developed by Arup. The Falkirk Wheel exemplifies simplicity and genius, capable of moving nearly 500 tons with the energy equivalent to a household blender. Among architects, I am inspired by Santiago Calatrava for his bold combination of art and engineering and by Frank Lloyd Wright for his innovative approach.

— If we imagine the future of construction 20 years from now, what would you like to see in the industry?

— That’s an interesting question. I hope that designers will place greater emphasis on the longevity and comfort of buildings while maintaining aesthetic and innovative elements. Although the industry evolves slowly, significant changes are already taking place due to increasing demands for quality in the real estate market. However, there is still much work to be done to ensure full synergy among all parties involved in construction.

— If you had no budget or time constraints, what dream project would you undertake?

— A project that is "impossible," complex, and unique, with as many challenges as possible. I have always been drawn to large-scale constructions because such projects require rigorous analysis, meticulous preparation, and creative solutions. I would have loved to work on structures like Tokyo’s Skytree Tower or the Marina Bay Sands complex. I believe we are all motivated by the challenges and complexities that drive us to reach new heights in our work. Glory is not for the complacent.
